Summer faded, and soccer tryouts came so fast. With soccer season approaching I could not wait for my junior year to start. It was so great to see all my friends and teammates again, and to be a part of one of the best teams Abington High School had ever seen. The season came and went full of fun, memories, and a remarkable record. Junior year was looking great, until it took a turn for the worst. School days quickly became my least favorite days; I dreaded waking up every morning. After many days in the doctors office and hospital visits, I was diagnosed with having severe anxiety. This disease can cause even the most familiar places to be scary to the patient affected. I could not comprehend how the place full of my best friends and the kids I grew up with could become so distant from me. My problem got so bad that I missed months of school and lost contact with the ones that I loved most. I felt as if I was hiding from the world; it even kept me out of the thing I love doing most, club soccer. I remember laying in bed day after day, where crying became a regular routine for me. My life was a mess, and I didnââ¬â¢t think I would ever put the pieces back together. I missed my junior prom, my pep rally, and so many things I looked forward to each and every year. I had lost all faith in myself although it was beyond my control. ââ¬Å"It will get better soon, the medicine will start working shortly, donââ¬â¢t worry things will be back to normal in no timeâ⬠, were things I was so sick of hearing. I knew getting my life back together would not be easy, but I was willing to do anything to get things back to the way they once were. The help from my mother, father, sisters, and brothers are what got me through the hardest year of my life, and I am so lucky to have had the support I received from them. My father took visits every day to school to pick up my work and drop it off to me, and my mother was at every doctorââ¬â¢s appointment. I spent each day teaching myself the material I was missing, and I worked so hard, being my own instructor. I got caught up with a lot of my work quickly, and was doing an excellent job of learning the material being sent home. Once the medication and visits began making me better I knew I still had the most difficult task of all: returning to school. As many people know, high school can be full of the most judgmental people. No one other than teachers had heard from me in so long that rumors were floating around everywhere. People I had never even talked to before were speaking my name out of their mouths. It took every ounce of courage in my body, and a morning full of sweaty palms and tears, but I promised myself I would do it. I worked too hard to let anything get in the way of my goal; I owed it to myself and to my family. I will never forget that day because it still stands as one of the biggest stepping stones in my life. I learned what it felt like to be stared at from people I had never even seen before. Whispers such as, ââ¬Å"I heard she was pregnantâ⬠and ââ¬Å"I heard she suffered from severe depressionâ⬠surrounded me, but I had my friends standing by me, and they were ecstatic to see me. I would be lying if I said it was easier than I thought it would be, because it was not at all. That day was one of t he hardest things I ever had to face, but after I got through it things slowly fell back into place. I was getting my life back, regardless of those who passed judgments too quickly. My junior year has made me a stronger and more understanding person. The work effort I had to put in proved to me that anything is possible. My situation made me realize that no matter what I face, I can get through anything with a little help from the people around me and hard work. I now walk into my school with a smile on my face, and I am having the time of my life my senior year. I feel fortunate for that struggle to have had happened in my life, because it brought out an inner strength I had never seen before. I am ready for whatever is put in front of me, and I know I can overcome any future challenges that I may be faced with.

On the other hand, fluency, or fluent reading is a process which is described as ââ¬Å"the link between decoding and comprehensionâ⬠(Morrow, Rueda, Lapp Gordon, 2009). It is a process which gives all learners the ability to move from monotonous and difficult reading to a kind of reading described as expressive and smooth. It is also defined as an automatic and accurate way of recognizing words, in addition to the proper use of prosody (Morrow, Rueda, Lapp Gordon, 2009). Fluency and automaticity are very important elements in all subjects. In language, there are several important skills, which include reading, writing, listening and speaking. The most important skill, which is in fact the opener to the other three, is reading. Since a student is required to know how to read in order to interpret comprehensions and understand all the other subjects, it is important for the teachers to emphasize on the skill. The recognition of the automatic word enables the reader to be attentive to all written texts. As a student begins to read, there is so much attention which is put on the exercise. With time, the ability of the learner in reading becomes automatic, and as a result, his or her attention lessens. This is described as ââ¬Å"freeing up of cognitive resources for the construction of meaningâ⬠(Morrow, Rueda, Lapp Gordon, 2009). According to NIFL (2007), learners at the beginning and intermediate level are generally slow readers, but they increase their reading speed as they advance. Non- native speakers of a certain language and adults in the literacy classes also have the same characteristics. The only way that the students can be helped to move from intentional, slow decoding to the word recognition level is through constant practice. Practice is very beneficial as it enables learners to have the wide exposure in printing (alphabetic), makes work easier for the learners and the students get to learn any form of written work whether phonologically, orthographically and morphologically presented (Morrow, Rueda, Lapp Gordon, 2009). All the same, development of automaticity is not the endpoint of the reading process. It is not the only way that measurement can take place. Once all reading cycles begin, there should be fluency developed, and the learners should also be shown how to apply the skills they have learnt. Additionally, the learners should also been made aware of the need to use the skills learnt and therefore should be encouraged in monitoring of the skills (Wifischer, Holmes Yang, 2007). Theoretical discussion on automaticity The automatist theorists state that attention is very vital in any form of automatic information processing. Attention consists of external and internal. Internal attention is abstract and cannot be observed directly. It has three major properties, selectivity, alertness and limited capacity (Philips, 2008).On the other hand, external attention is revealed by the attitude of the readers through all senses. This is discussed in a model referred to as the La Berge Samuel model. The theory suggests that if too much energy is spent on easy tasks like decoding, there will be very minimal energy for giving the comprehension. Additionally, meaning must be derived, as there must be printed words which are decoded. As reader becomes fluent, he or she requires very little attention so as to decode words. Therefore, they only require putting much focus on comprehension of the text (Philips, 2008). Reasons of measuring automaticity and fluency One of the reasons why the two concepts are measured is to ensure that the learners have the ability of reading words in all texts so that all the readers can direct all their few cognitive resources from just recognizing words, and use them also in reading and understanding of all comprehensions. Word recognition is measured initially through prosodic or expressive reading, which is commonly known ad the melodic reading. In this case, the learners try to make out the meaning of words through their voices. In silent reading, however, the meaning of all texts is also revealed by the manner in which the words are read, with phrasing, expression, different pace, stressing some words through making some dramatic pauses. In the long run, the learner develops fluency and automaticity (Rasinski Griffith, 2008). The other reason why automaticity and fluency is measured in learners is to model the students so that they can be braced to face the curriculum introduced to them in future. This begins by ensuring that the learners are fluent readers. So as to mould good fluency skills, the teacher first reads a text loudly in class as the learners follow. The teacher also asks them to follow the teachersââ¬â¢ voice, and even assigns some if the reading tasks to the parents so that they can assist their children at home. The teachers are also instrumental as he or she helps the learner to realize that learning is not only a matter of reading fast, but reading expressively through listening to the teachers directions (Rasinski Griffith, 2008).The reading process of a learner who is not well oriented to the concept of fluency and automatization is characterized by halting, inappropriate expressions, oral speech problems and several decoding errors (Fink Samuels, 2008). It is also important to measure fluency and automaticity in learners because the teacher is able to identify any learner who could be having eyesight problems. Therefore, the learner with the eyesight problem can be referred to an eye specialist as early as possible. Children with eye problems tend to struggle so much when reading. According to Getz, (2008), using the ââ¬ËSnellen eye chart testââ¬â¢ is not a good way of testing any visual activity. Once it happens, the teachers and parents get a false notion that the child is fit for learning. However, it is through reading that the child is able to assess whether the child has got any form of visual interference. There would be maximum development of the childââ¬â¢s potential if at all the visual pathways of the child are interfered with. Brain-based research reveals all the neurological reasons why the development of automaticity is so vital in all learning processes. There are very many clinical trials in several computer-based interventions which reveal the real world classroom results. The studies have revealed that the brain is ââ¬Å"a limited control processor that isnââ¬â¢t capable of efficiently managing both fixed knowledge processing and higher order reasoning at onceâ⬠(Auto Skill, 2009). Therefore, by automatizing knowledge which is fixed, for example decoding of letters, the students can focus on a high level of reasoning and comprehension. When automaticity continues developing, the processes of the brain also continue advancing. There are also ninety percent reductions in the activities of the cortex (Auto Skill, 2009). Learners who have good mathematics skills could probably have been exposed to very good fluency and automaticity orientation. This is because they learn how to decide information at a faster rate compared to those who have problems in fluency and automaticity. Therefore According to Auto Skill, (2009), development of mathematics skills is also measured by the students laying necessary work so as to attain all their academic goals. The core of fluency is in the automaticity concept, and it is also meaningful in mathematics. During the taxi ride to Dubai Airport a sense of inexplicable anticipation had built up within me. As we arrived at the airport, I stared in awe at the size and beauty of the place. Just looking at the sheer number of people in the airport overwhelmed me. When traveling by plane, most people are in fear of getting hijacked or the plane crashing, but the main form of fear for me was fear of getting lost at the airports or there being complications with the flight tickets. Although the reasons for my fear were trivial in comparison, they built up a sense of nervousness with me. As I perambulated through the long, tedious, oblique passageway of the edifice into the capacious waiting room, I started quivering in obvious trepidation. The waiting room was an enormous room abundant with people from many different social classes. This is where a compromise comes in, where both cup and water must balance. Since it is very unlikely to get what is preferred most of the time, it is essential to balance the whole time. In The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby finds himself in a predicament. The only motive he has in life is to marry his true love. He must choose money or love. People will lose their happiness to others, or try to take it all for themselves. Until an individual can make compromises, they will struggle with life. The main character Jay Gatsby has only been pursuing only his happiness. Gatsby looks at the ground and ââ¬Å"sees the blocks of the sidewalk really formed a ladder, and mounted in a secret place above the trees ââ¬â he could climb to his if he climbed alone and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder.â⬠This shows Gatsbyââ¬â¢s character, as he can imprint his fantasies in the real world, on such a mundane object of life, the sidewalk. Only Gatsby can see it because only he can climb the ladder into the upper class, he cannot take Daisy with him. Once he is up there, he can maintain his ignorance of life and maintains his god-like complex in his mindless dream. This is a good example of a metaphor for life as pap means lacking substance or real value. He has to choose between his happiness or status. Jayââ¬â¢s friend Meyer Wolfsheim played with the faith of fifty million people, like a burglar blowing a safe. One single p erson affected fifty million people. The narrator Nick Carraway is the only poor main character who lives on the pair of Eggs. Nick rents, Gatsby buys, and the Buchannanââ¬â¢s inherent. When Nick is offered a small job by Gatsby, he chooses to refuse. This could have bolstered his income and his happiness. Nick disapproved of Gatsby from the beginning to the end. Yet he aided and provided support to Gatsby with his wild plans. The only way Nick could escape his life was to get drunk. He gets drunk in Myrtleââ¬â¢s apartment and has lots of fun. During one of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s parties, Nick took two fingerbowls of champagne, and ââ¬Å"the scene had changed before my eyes into something significant elemental and profound.â⬠Alcohol is his way out of this world, and this is one of the things he does not admit to. At one of the parties the woman under the white plum tree, symbolizing purity is accompanied by a famous director. The director works his way up and kisses her. She does not pull back from the early signs of sexual misconduct, which shows us that the rich are not pure and want to keep ascending, even by resorting to sexual acts. Nick was going to berate Tom for such irresponsible behavior, then realized he was talking to a spoiled child. Nick reflects on the situation and comments, ââ¬Å"I couldnââ¬â¢t forgive him or like [Tom], but I saw what he had done was to him, highly justified.â⬠Nick sees that the rich are very irresponsible and careless and leave the poor to suffer. This cycle continues on and on, it will never stop unless everyone is equal, which will never happen due to human nature. The only way for everyone to have equal amounts of happiness is if it is shared. Some of the thing that prevents this is when people either take away all of their happiness to give to someone else, causing an imbalance which may shape a person for the worst, which is known as spoiling them. If the opposite occurs, where one person takes all of the joy and leaves the consequences to someone else, everyone suffers, and nothing good ever comes out of it. As Nick Carraway once said, ââ¬Å"Laughter is easier, minute by minute, spilled with prodigality tipped by a cheerful world.ââ¬
